After Treatment Care
Following root canal treatment there is a certain amount of healing that needs to take place. Even though the pulp or nerve has been removed from the inside of the tooth, the surrounding bone and ligament needs to heal. The amount of healing that needs to occur and length of time the healing process will take will depend specifically on your situation. In general, it is normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort the first 3-4 days after treatment.
The majority of the time we recommend taking 600 mg of Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) every 6 hours for the first 2-4 days after treatment.
If you have discomfort or pain while taking the Ibuprofen, we recommend taking 500-1000 mg of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in between the Ibuprofen doses.
If you are unable to take Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol, the Doctor will give you recommendations on what to take. If you have an emergency after hours that involves swelling or pain that cannot be minimized with the medications recommended, please call the emergency number that will be provided to you from your doctor.
